Simulating Snow with the Material Point Method
This thesis discusses the research and development steps for the simulation of snow with the Material Point Method (MPM). In order to gain an understanding in the technique and mathematics the MPM was researched in detail. All ten steps of the MPM were implemented using C++. First the method was implemented without the collision and implicit update. Next the body-collision for the particles and...
متن کاملEfficient Sampling for k-Determinantal Point Processes
Determinantal Point Processes (Dpps) are elegant probabilistic models of repulsion and diversity over discrete sets of items. But their applicability to large sets is hindered by expensive cubic-complexity matrix operations for basic tasks such as sampling. In light of this, we propose a new method for approximate sampling from discrete k-Dpps. Our method takes advantage of the diversity proper...
متن کاملEfficient barycentric point sampling on meshes
We present an easy-to-implement and efficient analytical inversion algorithm for the unbiased random sampling of a set of points on a triangle mesh whose surface density is specified by barycentric interpolation of non-negative per-vertex weights. The correctness of the inversion algorithm is verified via statistical tests, and we show that it is faster on average than rejection sampling.
متن کاملUncertainty Quantification in Rothermel’s Model Using an Efficient Sampling Method
111 Abstract—The purpose of the present work is to quantify parametric uncertainty in Rothermel’s wildland fire spread model (implemented in software such as BehavePlus3 and FARSITE), which is undoubtedly among the most widely used fire spread models in the United States. This model consists of a nonlinear system of equations that relates environmental variables (input parameter groups) such as...
متن کاملAn efficient sampling method for stochastic inverse problems
A general framework is developed to treat inverse problems with parameters that are random fields. It involves a sampling method that exploits the sensitivity derivatives of the control variable with respect to the random parameters. As the sensitivity derivatives are computed only at the mean values of the relevant parameters, the related extra cost of the present method is a fraction of the t...
